Question: What’s one task, routine, or PD resource you’ve used lately that you’d recommend? Tell us why it worked.

Hi!

I would like to share an upcoming resource/event - The Make math Moments Virtual Summit. This event is free and fully virtual, and it is happening November 14 and 15. It’s their 8th year. This year’s theme is building resilient problem solvers.

Over 55 math educators are presenting, including Peter Liljedahl, Pam Harris, Graham Fletcher, and Jennifer Bay-Williams. Sessions run live on Zoom, and each one earns you a 1-hour PD certificate. The free weekend pass gets you into every live session, with replays through Sunday at noon Eastern.

You can register here: https://summit.makemathmoments.com/

A couple of things worth knowing before you sign up.

The free pass doesn’t include an attendance certificate, only the individual session PD certificates. If you want a certificate of attendance, or more time with the replays, there are paid upgrade options too.

It’s also worth noting this is a participation certificate from Make Math Moments, not pre-approved CEU credit, so check with your district if that matters for you.

If it fits your week, it’s a great way to fill a Saturday with ideas.

One task I will use this week is. I am looking forward to it, because I will engage my teachers as learners and doers of math. It will open the conversation to math identity, agency, and positioning students through discourse and inquiry. It will also be the first PD I have gotten to plan this year.

I like this task! Please let us know how your PD goes.😁

It was great. I have 3 math teachers, so it is a tight-knit group. They first tried to estimate. That didn't go well. Then I mentioned something someone said during the notice and wonder, and asked how that might help. They saw the structure and were able to evaluate with ease. This opened a conversation about productive struggle and the question I asked to get the group going again.

Rea Smith has introduced me to her work of subitizing/groupitizing to help students build their number sense. I used it for the distributive property with variables. These open up conversations and give insight into what students are attending to.
