Exploring What’s Typical: Understanding the World Through Data
How do you know you can trust the data you see in a news article? Is “statistically significant” practically relevant? In this session we will collect and analyze data to explore the concept of meaningful results. We will give some hands-on ideas for collecting data at the middle grades and high school levels to use to develop concepts from graphical displays of data and descriptive statistics all the way to probability and inference. Along the way we will make graphs of our data and make interpretations and predictions. The activities covered in this session will hopefully inspire ideas that can be taken back to your classrooms and to teachers whom you lead. We will provide TI-84 Plus CE online calculator and TI-Nspire CX II online calculator access for everyone who is participating in order that they can use the calculators in the event they don’t have their own personal calculator to follow along with.
