A Day with Peter Liljedahl - Building Thinking Classrooms
Description
Overview from Peter
Much of how classrooms look and much of what happens in them today is guided by instructional norms laid down at the inception of an industrial-age model of public education. These norms have enabled a culture of teaching and learning that is often devoid of student thinking. In these sessions Peter will present some of the results of over 15 years on how leaders can help support teachers in their journey to change their classrooms from spaces where students mimic to spaces where they think. Leaders will leave with a number of strategies for inspiring and facilitating change, removing barriers to change, and working collaboratively to create and sustain change.
The practices discussed will intertwine with, and make extensive references to, the recently published book, Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics (Grades K-12): 14 Teaching Practices for Enhancing learning.
Looking at BTC Through a Leadership Lens
Join Peter Liljedahl and a small group of Arizona leaders for a day of learning with other coaches and administrators. We will start the day with a keynote from Peter, highlighting your role as a leader when implementing and understanding the Building Thinking Classrooms’ 14 practices. Peter will then workshop with smaller groups of leaders to get personal about systems and structures to support teachers with BTC. Other small groups will meet with Arizona Math Leaders to dive deeper into the change and support needed to implement BTC in mathematics and in other content areas. The day will wrap up with an opportunity to join Peter once more as he weaves the day’s learning together with some final thoughts.
Looking at BTC Through an Educator Lens
Join Peter Liljedahl and other Arizona Math Teachers for a day of learning and networking with other elementary, secondary, and higher-education teachers. Peter’s opening keynote will focus on using the BTC practices. This keynote will include something for everyone, whether you’re just beginning BTC implementation or if you’ve been implementing it for a while. Everyone will have the opportunity to workshop with Peter in a small-group setting to gain perspective and knowledge related to their grade-level band and the BTC practices. You’ll also rotate through small-group sessions led by other Arizona math leaders to support understanding and implementation of BTC. We will end the day altogether with Peter bringing closure and reflection to the learning of the day.
